The history of the name of Carleton or Carlton is a common name for parishes. The Carle or Ceorl, meaning countryman, farmer or peasant and ton meaning town. Therefore Carleton is the countryman’s town. To differentiate the name of Carleton on a village, a further name was added so we became East Carleton.

Before we became East Carleton we would have been known as Norwich Carleton or Norwich by Carleton.

There are no less than 49 Carleton’s in England. 4 in Norfolk, East Carleton, Carleton Forhoe, Carleton Rode and Carleton St Peter.
